2024 New Zealand Trip – Part 9

Te Anau – Kingston – Queenstown

May 16

  • Wake up to mist breaking up over mountains.
  • Drive back to Te Anau for lunch.
  • After lunch drive to Kingston. Stopped at the old railway station and did a 1hr hike along the lake.
  • Drive to our campsite. Freedom camping site next to the highway. Fantastic views.

May 17

  • Very windy morning in Kingston. Hit the road around 10am for a short drive to Queenstown.
  • Devil’s Staircase (scenic lookout) en route.
  • Lunch at Fergburger (world’s best burgers).
  • Gondola to top of mountain for lookout.
  • Walk around Queenstown. Sample craft beers at pub.
  • Drive to our campground – Driftaway Queenstown. Connor makes yummy stir fry for dinner.

May 18

  • Our first really wet day. Wind is whipping and rain coming down hard.
  • Drive to Arrowtown and check out the historic village and the Chinese Village (historic site). Post cards, coffee shop, new pullover, some groceries.
  • We decided to skip Wanaka since the weather was so bad and we likely would not have been able to see anything. Snow storm in the forecast for the area. We drive to Omarama and stay at Omarama Top 10. Not much more than a field, but nice common areas.
