2024 New Zealand Trip – Part 1

Toronto - Vancouver - Auckland - Christchurch

I took off from Toronto on April 28th and headed for Vancouver via Porter Airlines. Porter recently started flying the Embraer E195 aircraft on the Toronto - Vancouver route. I was listening for the pilot saying, "I wonder what this button does?" but thankfully the flight was uneventful.

I had to decided to stay on night in Vancouver to break up the flying. I stayed at the (not) Quality Inn in Richmond which was a short drive from the airport in their shuttle. The hotel was basic but was comfortable. I was pleasantly surprised that there was a larger park behind the hotel.

I walked around Richmond mostly aimlessly just checking out the neighbourhood. Next day a bit of the same and then off to the airport around 5pm.

I flew Air New Zealand on a 787-9 Dreamliner in business class so not too many complaints about the accommodations. The flight was a bit late taking off so just before 10pm PT we were airborne. The seats flip over and turn into lie flat beds. Very comfortable but still not too much sleep happening.

We landed in Auckland around 5:30am and after clearing customs (slow!) and getting my suitcase I was able to walk outside and catch the sunrise. Somehow through the magic of international date lines it was May 1st. April 30th had just disappeared.

I had about an hour by that time to get my suitcase transferred to the domestic flight and get over to the domestic terminal. I made it in plenty of time to catch my flight to Christchurch.

After 1.5 hour flight I was in Christchurch! It was about 10am and Connor was a good lad and came to the airport to pick me up. I was so happy to see Connor!!!

We dropped my bags at the AirBnB and headed off. Connor showed my a local park and we headed to Lyttleton for some lunch. We ate at Fisherman's Wharf right on the water...SO GOOD!
